The Great Sand Dune adventure and Leaping Deer Ranch with family

Alas, we had to say goodbye to the horses this morning. They served us well during our slumber. We made a quick escape out of Monta Vista and set our sights on Great Sand Dunes National Park, a short 45 minute drive away. George and I stamped our passports at the visitor center and then we headed to the dunes for Bun Hur cosplay. Well, not really, but hey, we did talk about the movie.
Alex and George were quite adventurous and climbed up to a dune about 2/3 of the way up the entire mountain of sand. I sat on a smaller dune, discovering that some of the sand was magnetic. You see, we had two iPhone cases with us that had magnetic closures to keep sand and water away from devices. I had one empty one with me and sand was attracted to it. Very attracted. So I spent the hour they hiked doing experiments with magnetic sand and trying to spot which little dots in the distance were my kids.
We left very sandy, very hungry and very thirsty. Lunch was super mediocre and took an unreasonably long time to serve. But I was occupied coordinating our next big adventure: family reunion at Leaping Deer Ranch. Folks came from all over the place to the little town of Las Vegas NM. There are 17 of us in total and we are staying in a 7 bedroom ranch.
We all arrived and had a tasty dinner by 8 PM. Here are the players for the next for days. My dad and his wife (Old Granddad and Nonnie to the young ones) came from Madison. My mom (Noname or Nonnie for the kiddos), my little brother Mark, his wife Tiffany, and their three girls Aris, Taylor and Rowan, My baby sister Miky and her kids Andre and Sofia all came from Albuquerque. George, Alex and I arrived from Minneapolis. Jen, my older sister and her daughter Eliza came from northern Colorado. Her son Scotty drove up from Albuquerque with that contingent. Big old family for sure,.
After dinner, we watched the stars, talked about how we all drove each other crazy as kids and marveled at our own growing kids. We have three full days at the ranch. I’m ready.
